What’s Needed to Quote

In this lesson, we will go over the important pieces of information needed to provide a client with a quote.

First is obviously the basic information – name, phone, email. It’s nice to know their name and have a way to get in touch, right?

Age – Depending on the lead vendor, this will either come over as their age – or date of birth.

After that is gender, and then location. The zip code and county is very important – because – as mentioned with the Federal Poverty Level – plans also vary depending on location.

Next is the household size. The government offers discounts, also known as subsidies, to families based on their income. So the price of an individual making $30,000 a year, will be different from a husband and wife making the same – and same goes for a household of 4, etc.

Household size is determined by the number of people someone claims on taxes. So if a person has a spouse and 2 kids – the household size would be 4.

And lastly is the household income. It is very important to note that I said household income. If someone is looking for coverage for themselves, but they have a spouse in the same household – their income must be accounted for – even if the other person isn’t taking coverage. Why?

The reason for this is that the government bases their discounts based on total household income. So if someone got a plan for themselves, only claiming their income – but come to find out that their total household income is X – come tax time they will receive a penalty and have to pay back a portion of the discounts they received.

If this situation ever does come up – it’s important that you state the repercussions to the client if they want to go ahead and do this. It’s not recommended, but if the client is aware and does not care – then ultimately it’s on them.

And that is what is needed to build a quote on Healthsherpa. Again, most lead vendors will give you all of this information – but it is extremely important that you confirm all of this information with the client once you get them on the phone – to make sure everything is accurate before submitting the plan.
